Whether you’re just starting out and need help with initial setup and registration, or you’re an established business looking to optimize your financial management and prepare for growth, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Our bookkeeping for sole traders service uses cloud-based software for real-time financial visibility. We implement digital systems that automatically import your bank transactions, categorize expenses, and maintain the audit trail required by HMRC. This means you always know exactly where your business stands financially, and you’re building the digital records you’ll need for Making Tax Digital compliance. We handle the day-to-day record-keeping so you can focus on running your business.
We prepare detailed year-end accounts that give you clear insight into your business performance. These accounts go beyond basic compliance to provide meaningful analysis of your profitability, cash flow, and financial position. We help you understand what the numbers mean for your business and identify opportunities for improvement in the year ahead.
Our payroll services for sole traders handle everything from calculations to submissions, ensuring your employees are paid correctly and on time, every time. We manage PAYE, National Insurance contributions, pension auto-enrollment, and all the reporting requirements that come with employing people. Payroll errors can damage employee trust and create compliance issues, so we make sure everything runs smoothly.
Strategic tax planning is where we add tremendous value beyond basic compliance. We provide proactive advice throughout the year, helping you time major purchases for optimal tax treatment, structure your income efficiently, and plan for future tax obligations. We help you set aside approximately 30% of each invoice to cover tax liabilities, ensuring you’re never caught short when payment deadlines arrive.
We support business setup and registration for new sole traders. If you’re just starting out, we handle your HMRC registration, which must be completed by October 5 following the end of the tax year in which you commenced trading. We ensure you’re set up correctly from the beginning, establishing good financial practices that will serve you well as your business grows.
We manage your self-assessment tax returns from start to finish. This includes calculating your tax liability, identifying all allowable deductions, completing the SA100 form accurately, and submitting it to HMRC before the January 31 deadline. We also help you understand your payments on account obligations and plan for these advance payments, which are required when your previous year’s tax liability exceeds £1,000.

Our clients include consultants and freelancers offering professional services, from IT specialists and marketing consultants to designers and writers. Understanding your tax obligations is essential for proper financial planning. For the 2026/27 tax year, sole traders benefit from a personal allowance of £12,570, meaning income up to this threshold is not taxed. Beyond this allowance, you’ll pay income tax at progressive rates based on your profit level.
The basic rate of 20% applies to profits between £12,571 and £50,270. If your profits fall within this range, you’ll pay 20% tax on the amount above your personal allowance. For example, if your profit is £30,000, you’d pay no tax on the first £12,570, then 20% on the remaining £17,430, resulting in £3,486 in income tax.
Higher earners face steeper rates. The higher rate of 40% applies to profits between £50,271 and £125,140, while the additional rate of 45% applies to profits above £125,140. These rates apply specifically to England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with Scotland operating different tax bands.
In addition to income tax, you’ll pay National Insurance Contributions. Class 2 NICs cost £3.65 per week for the 2026/27 tax year, which is mandatory if your profits exceed £7,105. Class 4 NICs add another layer: you’ll pay 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% on profits above £50,270.
Let’s look at a practical example. If you’re a sole trader with £40,000 in profit, here’s what you’d pay:
Income tax: 20% on £27,430 (£40,000 minus £12,570 personal allowance) = £5,486
Class 2 NIC: £3.65 × 52 weeks = £189.80
Class 4 NIC: 6% on £27,430 = £1,645.80
Total tax: £7,321.60
This is why we recommend setting aside approximately 30% of each invoice to cover tax liabilities. This ensures you have sufficient funds available when payment deadlines arrive on January 31 and July 31 each year.
